Staffy puppy training is one of the most fundamental priorities when you first acquire a staffordshire bull terrier. It’s a good idea to focus on training throughout the first yr as that will stop your puppy coming to any harm. You can also work on those aspects of education that will protect others from your dog. Staffy puppy training must take into account the nature of the bull terrier, but a lot of the basics are the same as for other dog breeds.
Staffy training is important throughout the dog’s puppyhood as this is the phase when habits are formed. Young children are relatively uncomplicated to train since they don’t yet have fixed behaviours, and the same holds true for pups, who will relish training more while they are juvenile.
You will have to start with teaching your pet about going to the toilet outside of the house. You can accomplish this in a couple of different ways. One of these approaches is to educate your dog to go to the bathroom after a meal, say, or just before the family goes to bed. Nevertheless, you will need to consider what you will do if your dog needs to do its business between these times, which can happen during an illness. Sometimes, you need to teach your pet to tell you when it needs to go.
Teaching your animal to tell you when it needs to go is easier than you would think, as long as you do it early on. Whenever you let your pet outside, ask it if it needs to go. Your dog will start to link your chosen phrase with going to the toilet, and will soon respond instantly when you ask if it wants to go. Of course, the animal will ignore you if it does not.
Taking a puppy for a walk is great fun for you both, but can be serious in the absence of any education. Most folks with a new dog live in towns where they are surrounded by busy roads, people using sidewalks and other families with pets. So in this context teaching your staffy pup to sit, stay and come back to you is extremely important. It can take a bit of time to instill these commands into your dog’s mind. In fact, there are a few owners who cannot do this at all.
The problem is that dogs like to frolic and explore so you will need to start and then gradually work your way up to allowing it to explore freely in the park. One excellent idea that will help is to instruct your staffy to sit when you are in the safety of your house, and then get it used to the same instruction out in the garden. You will need to allow it to explore while on the lead when at the park but you could work your way up to allowing it off the lead. Then you can in time get your dog to walk along beside you without using a lead at all.
A dog can struggle when around other people or animals and this is something that you may need to deal with during staffy puppy training. If your pup spent a fair bit of time with its brothers and sisters it will already be socialized to some degree. You will need to get some guests over every now and then while your dog is in its first year to find out whether it has learned what to do. It’s behaviour could range from jumping up on your guests or just quietly walking over to say hello. Of course in these circumstances you want your dog to behave quietly and gently.
These ideas and principles are a great starting point for staffy puppy training and make an excellent grounding for more advanced education techniques.
